Concrete
Calcium carbonate fines (CCF) are used in the form of Betocarb® in the concrete market as quality fillers in concrete wares such as paving stones, tubes and sewage tanks as well as in ready-mix and pre-cast concrete.
CCF accelerate the hydration of the cement matrix, resulting in higher early strength figures. Durability is improved by better permeability. The light and stable color makes the product more aesthetic, rendering it ideal for architectural applications.
CCF have clearly shown a significant superiority in daily practice in meeting all key demands of the concrete and mortar producers.
Workability properties of semi-dry, plastic or self-compacting concretes and self-leveling mortars are improved. Particle size distribution in combination with cement and admixtures can be optimized, resulting in e.g. increased green strength, better pumpability and less bleeding. For self-compacting concretes, CCF have proven to be the most reliable and practical industrially produced stabilizer.
Strength, especially early strength, is obtained due to the catalytic crystallization of the CCF in combination with cement types such as portland and blast furnace slag cements. The improved filling effect and the particle size distribution of the cement results in a higher mechanical packing density. Also the adhesion of all ingredients is improved. CCF is used in controllable low strength and ultra high performance concrete as well as a vast range of mortars and screeds.
Sustainability is assured by very low CO2 emissions. Durability is improved due to the lower permeability of the concrete matrix.
Affordability is also a factor, compared with other useful high performing fines.
Aesthetics can be enhanced by a smoother surface, less efflorescence, and the selected color of the CCF.
